Henry Schein Cares honors entrepreneurship and innovation in oral health care for a ninth consecutive year.
MELVILLE, New York--Henry Schein, a provider of health care products and services to office-based practitioners, has supported the 2011 Dr. Edward B. Shils Entrepreneurial Fund Awards.The awards honor entrepreneurial initiatives that educate the public on the importance of oral health, provide educational opportunities for those in the dental industry and profession, or demonstrate innovative care, policy or service models. The awards were presented at the Edward B. Shils Entrepreneurial Education Fund Award Recognition Gala held at the Union League of Philadelphia in Philadelphia, Pa. This is the ninth year that Henry Schein Cares, the company’s global corporate social responsibility program, has supported the Edward B. Shils Entrepreneurial Fund.“Dr. Edward B. Shils’ vision and work continue to inspire and influence us seven years after his passing,” said Stanley M. Bergman, chairman and chief executive officer of Henry Schein. “Ed lives on through the people and projects that he inspired, which are in turn enriching the lives of thousands of people around the world. Through this special award, we celebrate the principles of leadership and entrepreneurship that Ed championed during his lifetime, and it is truly a great honor to recognize the entrepreneurial spirit of these very deserving winners of the 2011 Dr. Edward B. Shils Award.”Dr. Edward B. Shils Entrepreneurial Fund Award winners are chosen annually, and presented with a monetary prize to be given to the recipient organization of their choice. The 2011 winners included: Dr. Burton Edelstein, chair of Behavioral Sciences and professor of clinical dentistry and clinical health policy and management at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine; Dr. Allen Finkelstein, chief executive officer of Bedford HealthCare Solutions and the former chief dental officer of AmeriChoice/United Health Group; Gary Price, chief executive officer of the Dental Trade Alliance; and the University of Washington Pediatric Clinic. Henry Schein program helps sustain support for cancer awarenessThe 2011 Shils-Meskin Award winner was Dr. Harold Slavkin, professor of dentistry at the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry, University of Southern California, and former dean of the dental school and director of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research within the National Institutes of Health. Special Recognition Awards were given to Jeffrey Perelman, chairman and CEO of JEP Management; and Senior Mobile Dental. The Founder Award was given to Stephen Boss--the first student to receive the award--who is ranked in the Top 10 of his class at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, an ASDA Board trustee and delegate, and a researcher on diabetes, maxillofacial projects and osteogenesis work.Steve Kess, Henry Schein’s vice president of global professional relations, serves as chairman of the Dr. Edward B.
