Biolux Research announces start of two additional clinical trials for light-accelerated orthodontics

March 14, 2012
Biolux Research has started two new human clinical trials to evaluate the effects of phototherapy on tooth movement.

VANCOUVER, B.C., CANADABiolux Research Ltd. is pleased to announce the start of two new controlled and randomized clinical trials to investigate the effects of OrthoPulse phototherapy technology on orthodontic treatment and overall timelines. Both studies are designed to evaluate the effect of light treatment during the complete whole-mouth orthodontic treatment protocol in treated groups compared to control groups. These clinical trials are also designed to evaluate any impact of light treatment on compliance (patient acceptance of treatment), patient lifestyle, post-adjustment discomfort, and any change in levels of medication.

The first study will be conducted by the Department of Orthodontics at Mahidol University in Bangkok, Thailand, and the principal investigator is Peerapong Santiwong DDS, PhD (dental science). The protocol includes evaluating the effect of OrthoPulse treatment on adult patients receiving nonextraction orthodontic treatment with fixed, self-ligating appliances, and the study has already received ethics approval from the institution. This is the third study in a series of collaborations with Dr. Santiwong. Mahidol University has continuously strived for educational excellence, outstanding research, and leadership in health-care services.

The second study is set at the Department of Orthodontics at European University College (formerly Nicolas and Asp University College), Dubai Healthcare City, UAE. The principal investigators are Amer Nahas, BDS, and Donald Ferguson, DMD, MSD, professor and dean, and former professor and chair of orthodontics at Boston University. This study is planned to treat adult nonextraction orthodontic patients with self-ligating brackets. The study has received ethics approval from the institution, and patient recruitment has started. European University College is proud to be the first accredited postgraduate dentistry college in the region, with an international faculty from USA, Sweden, England and the UAE. “We are thrilled to expand our clinical road map with these important studies to evaluate the effects of our technology on overall orthodontic treatment timelines, and we are very pleased to work with such interesting researchers and institutions,” states Kevin Strange, president and CEO of Biolux Research. “The orthodontic market is very interested in the accelerated rate of tooth movement, but the ultimate measure of clinical efficacy is the effect on the quality and overall timeline of orthodontic treatment. Our animal and human study results to date support our confidence that our OrthoPulse™ product will reduce average treatment timelines by two-thirds, which will revolutionize the orthodontics market.”
