CHICAGO, Illinois--The American College of Prosthodontists has announced National Prosthodontics Awareness Week is slated April 22-28, 2012. The week-long celebration will inform the public about proper oral health including oral cancer detection, will provide consumers with details on how to best care for missing teeth, and will educate the public about the benefits of seeing a prosthodontist.Related information, click here.The ACP urges consumers to learn when and why they may need to seek the care of a prosthodontist, a dentist with three additional years of training beyond dental school. One of the primary goals of the campaign is to raise public awareness about the importance of a healthy mouth."As a prosthodontist, I know that tooth loss happens from dental decay, gum disease or oral cancer, or simply occurs from wear in the mouth," said Avinash S. Bidra, BDS, MS, FACP, 2012 NPAW co-chair. "As a prosthodontist, I help make people whole again by bringing back your smile."Prosthodontists nationwide will be hosts to free events, including oral health screenings, lectures, community service outreach, among other activities geared toward the public and patients."As a prosthodontist, I often work with a team of dental professionals to create a comprehensive treatment plan for patients," said Lawrence E. "Patients who are particularly concerned about the quality of their dental care should consider seeing a prosthodontist."With some 178 million people in the U.S. missing at least one tooth, increased awareness about proper oral health is critical.
