CHICAGO, Illinois--After feedback from previous students, the American Dental Association’s Center for Evidence-Based Dentistry and the Forsyth Institute's Center for Evidence-Based Dentistry have announced they will hold the ADA/Forsyth EBD course in 2012.
Scheduled for Nov. 5-9, 2012, at the Forsyth Institute in Cambridge, Mass., the five-day training course in evidence-based principles and tools is a collaboration between the ADA and Forsyth. The course links the initiatives of the ADA Center for EBD with Forsyth's history of EBD and scientific research.
Focus of EBD coursework
Participants will learn the skills to understand, appraise, and implement new dental treatment and diagnostic options into their practice, curriculum, or research. Taking an interactive, problem and solution-based approach, EBD coursework focuses on human clinical trials while addressing quantitative and qualitative outcomes, risk calculation, and systematic reviews.
Participants will be challenged to:
* Formulate clinical questions
* Search for evidence
* Practice critical reading and appraisal
* Implement EBD into practice
* Understand clinical trial design
* Navigate the ADA EBD website (EBD.ada.org) and Critical Summaries of Systematic Reviews
Who should attend
The hands-on learning environment is an opportunity for the many different disciplines of dentistry to collaborate on evidence-based solutions in their work. Previous attendees benefiting from the course include private and public health practitioners, educators, researchers, and dentists working in industry.
The 40-student class will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis. Interested U.S. and international candidates should submit their applications by Sept. 7, 2012. Note that the course will only be offered in English.
Candidates must fill out a questionnaire and submit current curriculum vitae. The $2,500 course offers a 20% discount to ADA members, but is also open to nonmembers. The first 40 applicants will receive $500 off the tuition from the course co-sponsor, Sunstar Americas. Course graduates receive ADA continuing education credits and a certificate in EBD from the Forsyth Institute.

The distinguished faculty for the 2012 session includes Richard Niederman, DMD, MA, director of the Center for Evidence-Based Dentistry at the Forsyth Institute; Derek Richards, BDS, MSc, DDPH, FDS (DPH) , director of the Centre for Evidence-Based Dentistry at Oxford University, UK; and Elliot Abt, DDS, MS, MSc, attending staff at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, Chicago.
