The average number periodic dental exams (D0120) declined substantially in 2010 and 2011, although the first two quarters of 2012 indicated a rebound, according to data compiled by Sikka Software Corp.

The California company tracks fees and production in dental offices nationally. Sikka Software posted the chart below to illustrate the dip in periodic exams.

The company explained the statistics by reporting, “The table shows the average number of periodic exams per practice by year and quarter. As you can see in 2011 and 2010, the numbers are going down. In 2011, the average for the year is 508.5 and for 2010 average is 504.25. There is a positive difference from 2011 to 2012 with Q1 jumping to 44.”
