Boston dental community leader to become HDA president

The Board of Trustees of the Hispanic Dental Association hsd announced the selection of Dr. Maritza Morell as 2013 Board president. 

WASHINGTON, D.C--The Board of Trustees of the Hispanic Dental Association has announced the selection of Dr. Maritza Morell as 2013 Board president.

Dr. Morell is a Board-Certified pediatric dentist, and a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. She is a clinical attending at the Boston Children’s Hospital and at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine where she is the faculty advisor to the HDA student chapter.

Dr. Morell is a teacher, lecturer, and advocate for children's dental access issues. As a faculty member at HSDM, she is the past Director of Pre-Doctoral Pediatric Dentistr,y and has served on committees such as the Admissions Committee at Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Boston Children's Hospital Pediatric Dentistry Department and Harvard University admissions to college.

In addition to her academic endeavors, Dr. Morell owns a pediatric dental practice in Lawrence/Andover, Mass., where she treats medically compromised children, as well as children from underserved minority groups. Dr. Morell attended college at Loyola University, New Orleans. She obtained dental and public health degrees from the University of Puerto Rico School of Dental Medicine, University of Puerto Rico School of Public Health, University of Michigan School of Dentistry and the Harvard University School of Public Health.

She has received leadership, academic, and faculty awards at the different institutions for which she has been involved as a student and as a dental teacher.

“I am humbled by, and enthusiastic about the opportunity to serve as president of HDA, such a great association,” Dr. Morell said.

“The Hispanic Dental Association is a very good dental association, full of dedicated and caring members that all embrace our vision of 'giving' to the Hispanic community. It has been a privilege to serve during the past years with remarkable friends as an HDA member, a committee participant, committee chairman, treasurer, vice president, president elect, and now president in 2013. Our leaders at HDA, do believe in the importance of mentoring, treat dental patients who cannot get treatment anywhere else, and care about the career advancement of students, residents, trainees and faculty without regard to race, ethnicity or gender. Our Board of Directors is comprised of excellent dental professional leaders throughout United Sates that are consummate teachers, deans, directors, specialists, clinicians, researchers and role models. I am very proud of them.”
