Compared to other living expenses, dental insurance isn't very expensive after all, says IHC Specialty Benefits.

These statistics have been compiled from the U.S. Bureau of Labor and the National Retail Federation by IHC Specialty Benefits. It compares the cost of items Americans purchase every day with an insurance quote for a 40-year-old woman living in Texas. Her cost for basic preventive dental insurance is $13.56 a month, or $162.72 for a year. IHC argues that, compared to the amount of money Americans spend annually on entertainment and extraneous (and harmful) food items such as soda, dental insurance is barely a blip in the radar.
