In this Director’s Message, I continue providing exclusive interviews from my Empowerment Series in 2012 (click here for first installment). The spotlight today is on Christine Hovliaras. Christine Hovliaras recently published four Savvy Success volumes:

  • Volume I: You-Roles-Practice Environment
  • Volume II: Patient Care
  • Volume III: Technology-Ethics-Career Success
  • Faculty Guide

Having just completed three out of the four, it's kind of like the "Fifty Shades of Grey," You get the first book, then the second and the third book, and so on.

In the Savvy Success Books, especially "Achieving Professional Excellence and Career Satisfaction in the Dental Hygiene Profession Volume 1, the focus is on hygienists and our roles, practice environments, and career tools. It has actionable templates and steps that can be easily implemented. No guesswork. Christine has done all the foundational work for us!

Many readers have experienced slowness on clinical days. At this point in time for many, it's tremendously difficult to bring in enough money to pay bills. When you get stuck like that, then you have to go to Plan B, and or a Plan C. Yet, many hygienists I speak with do not have a Plan B or C. If you do not, the Savvy Success books will help establish goals and provide career guidance. It’s like having a mentor with you 24/7.

Many readers are familiar with the roles ADHA has defined for dental hygienists: clinicians, researchers, advocates, public health, and educators. Christine identified a sixth role, corporate. Following those categories, Christine interviewed several people in those roles to look at what's needed educationally, what's required skill wise, what did they believe was relevant to them to make the decision and go in those roles.
