Speak for Yourself in Your Dental Practice: Without doing intricate lifts on a pair of ice skates

Feb. 27, 2014
Illusion and reality are often two different things

Want to partner up and do some ice dancing? The United State’s golden Olympic performance by ice dancers Meryl Davis and Charlie White make it look easy. Many people even think, “I can do that.” This reminds me of a beautiful flock of ducks gliding on to a lake. They make it look effortless above the water, while their feet are peddling like crazy under the water.

Illusion vs. Reality
Davis and White practiced for 17 years to create an illusion at the Iceberg Skating Palace. Sally Jenkins, columnist for "The Washington Post," writes, “Their fleet, whirling performance of ‘Scheherazade’ was just a masquerade for two athletes straining to do something unimaginably hard: win in a sport historically dominated by Russians and Canadians, on Russian home ice.”

Their illusion: Easy, smiles, woman enchanted by Persian king, and regal love.
Their reality: High stakes pressure, grueling hard work, torturous discipline, and extreme nervousness.

Here’s what I want to share with dentists from this Olympic performance, and how to speak for yourself in your dental practice:
• An “easy” performance is the result of a lot of practice
• A lot of practice creates muscle memory
• Muscle memory adds to your confidence
• Confidence reduces nervousness and enhances your gravitas
• Gravitas produces results

Many of our Speak For Yourself® clients, including dentists and CEOs, knock on our door to gain more confidence and overcome their nervousness. Just like Davis and White, you can work hard, have a vision of excellence, remain disciplined, and create an illusion based on pragmatic reality.
