American Association of Endodontists selects new leaders

The American Association of Endodontists appointed its 2014-2015 officers and added five new members to its Board of Directors during the Association’s Annual Session, April 30 to May 3, in Washington, D.C.

Robert S. Roda, DDS, MS, President. Dr. Roda runs a private endodontic practice in Scottsdale, Ariz., and serves as a visiting lecturer at the Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health and as an adjunct assistant professor at Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas, Texas. An AAE member since 1991, Dr. Roda serves as an associate editor of the Journal of Endodontics, is a Trustee of the AAE Foundation Board and is a member of the Annual Session Planning Committee. He became a diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics in 1998. Dr. Roda received his DDS from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, and his MS in oral biology and certificate in endodontics from Baylor College of Dentistry.
Terryl A. Propper DDS, MS, President-Elect. Dr. Propper is a senior partner of a seven-doctor, two-location endodontic practice in Nashville, Tenn., and has been with Endodontic Associates for more than 25 years. An AAE member since 1988, Dr. Propper served the Association in a variety of leadership roles. Before becoming an endodontist, Dr. Propper served as the assistant director of marketing for the ADA. She received her DDS from the University of Tennessee and her MS and certificate in endodontics from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill.
Linda G. Levin DDS, PhD, Vice President. Dr. Levin received her DDS and certificate in endodontics from UNC Chapel Hill. As a Physician Scientist Award Recipient from the National Institutes of Health she completed a PhD in microbiology and immunology at UNC School of Medicine in 1995. With more than 20 years of experience at the UNC School of Dentistry, currently an adjunct associate professor, Dr. Levin served as the department chair of endodontics and authored numerous peer reviewed papers, book chapters and review articles in the areas of endodontics and pulp biology. Dr. Levin maintains a private practice in Durham N.C., and is a diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics.
Garry L. Myers DDS, Secretary. After 16 years in private practice in Tumwater, Wash., Dr. Myers is transitioning to an educator position and will join the faculty of the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry this summer. A diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics since 1994, Dr. Myers is chairing the Special Committee on the AAE Executive Director Search and also serves on the Special Committee to Investigate a Clinical Journal and the Editorial Board Committee. He is a past president of the Washington State Association of Endodontists.
Patrick E. Taylor, DDS, MS, Treasurer. Dr. Taylor has been in private endodontic practice in Bellevue, Wash., since 1998. Prior to that, he served in the U.S. Navy Dental Core, last serving as the executive officer of the Naval Dental Center, Pearl Harbor. He received his DDS from the University of California at San Francisco and his certificate in endodontics from the University of Washington in Seattle. He currently holds an appointment as an affiliate associate professor at the University of Washington School of Dentistry. Dr. Taylor is a diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics and previously served on the Board of Directors from 2003 to 2006.
Gary R. Hartwell, DDS, MS, Immediate Past President. Dr. Hartwell retired from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey’s New Jersey Dental School after nearly 10 years as full professor, chair and postgraduate program director of the department of endodontics. An AAE member since 1972, Dr. Hartwell served the AAE in many capacities and he currently serves on the Journal of Endodontics Scientific Advisory Board and the AAE Foundation Board of Trustees. Dr. Hartwell is an accomplished endodontic educator previously serving in leadership capacities at Virginia Commonwealth University and the U.S. Army Dental Corps. He has been a diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics since 1980 and has had several hospital appointments. He also has been serving this year as interim executive director of the AAE.
Michelle L. Mazur-Kary, DDS, MPH, District I Director, representing Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Vermont, and Virginia. Dr. Mazur-Kary graduated from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry in 1985 and completed a GPR at the University of Vermont School of Medicine in 1986. After practicing general dentistry for 12 years in Norway, Maine, she attended the Harvard School of Dental Medicine for her three-year endodontic training which she completed in 2001. In addition to her endodontic certificate, Dr. Mazur-Kary also earned a Master of Public Health from Harvard with a concentration in health care, finance, and management. A diplomate of the ABE and private practicing endodontist in Auburn, Maine, Dr. Mazur-Kary is the immediate past president of the Maine Dental Association.
Maria C. Maranga, DDS District II Director,representing Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island. Dr. Maranga received her DDS and certificate in endodontics from New York University. She has served as consultant to the V.A., several GPR hospital programs and on the faculty at Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine. She is the current president of the New York State Association of Endodontics, past president of the Suffolk County Dental Society, membership council chair of the New York State Dental Association, and member of the ADA Council on Membership. She is a graduate of the ADA’s Institute on Diversity and Leadership and now serves a three-year term as a consultant.
Mark A. Odom, DDS, District III Director, representing Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Dr. Odom received his DDS and certificate in endodontics from Louisiana State University School of Dentistry. He has maintained a private practice in Cary, N.C., for more than 27 years. Dr. Odom has been adjunct faculty at both LSUSD and UNC Chapel Hill School of Dentistry. He previously served as a president of the Tarheel Endodontic Association.
Kimberly A.D. Lindquist, DDS, MSD, District VI Director, representing Alaska, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, and Guam. Dr. Lindquist graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry and completed a GPR at the VA Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minn. After practicing general dentistry for 10 years, Dr. Lindquist completed her graduate endodontic training at Case Western Reserve University. A diplomate of the ABE, Dr. Lindquist is president of the Northeastern District Dental Society and past president of the Minnesota Association of Endodontists. In addition to maintaining a private practice in Duluth, Minn., Dr. Lindquist also is an assistant adjunct professor for the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry.
Nava Fathi, DDS, District VII Director, representing California. Dr. Fathi received her DDS from the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, and has been employed as an associate professor in the Department of Endodontics since she received her endodontic certification from the University of Southern California School of Dentistry in 1998. She is currently pursuing a doctorate in education at the University of the Pacific Glady L. Benerd School of Education, and also maintains a private practice in San Jose, Calif. Dr. Fathi previously served as president of the California State Association of Endodontists, the Santa Clara County Dental Society, and the Alumni Association of the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry. She is presently serving as a trustee on the California Dental Association Board and the Foundation Board of the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry. New members of the AAE Foundation Board of Trustees are Drs. Patricia A. Tordik and AAE Vice President Linda G. Levin. The new Foundation Executive Committee is President Dr. Louis E. Rossman, President-Elect Dr. Peter A. Morgan, Secretary Dr. Mary T. Pettiette, and Treasurer Mr. Jack Burlison. New members of the American Board of Endodontics are Drs. Stephen B. Davis and Asgeir Sigurdsson. This ABE’s officers are President Dr. James D.
