Hygienists 31 to 40 years in age

May 2, 2014
  • I feel like I have made an impact in the short time I have been practicing, and I feel like my role is rewarding most days.
  • Difficult to find fulltime employment in the field. Although I am passionate about dental hygiene, I work in another capacity most of the time.
  • Being a dental hygienist is the best balance of autonomy without too much financial responsibility. I feel life is generally more stable as a hygienist compared to my original choice of wanting to become a dentist.
  • I love my job. I enjoy working with the doctor and my fellow team members. I believe in preventive care and am passionate about my job.
  • I have a wonderful dentist to work for, and my opinions are considered with everything.
  • I love the relationships I have established over the last 15 years in our practice with my patients. I love my flexible schedule and feel my pay is fair. I am able to have an important career and stay involved in my children's busy schedules by working three days a week. It works great for my family. I feel like a make a difference at the end of the day in my patients’ health and happiness.
  • I was an engineer before, but i feel that this job suits my personality me more. I love helping people while making an excellent salary with a very flexible schedule.
  • I enjoy my job and the interaction with my patients. I get satisfaction from educating my patients and helping them have the best possible oral hygiene and care for their mouth.
  • I knew from an early age I wanted to help people. This profession allows me to be an educator; therefore, I have the potential to help my patients achieve healthy, stable mouths.
  • I earned a degree. I influence peoples lives daily. I wish the market wasn't so saturated. It takes away from the quality of care out there..
  • It’s a pleasure providing oral care to my clients, knowing that all my hard work is affecting their overall health. In addition, even though I know I am educating clients to better their health, there's not a day that I don't learn something interesting from them.
  • I feel like there are more disadvantages than advantages for dental hygienists . I love my job but dentists will say they can’t give us holiday/sick/vacation pay because we make too much money. Bonuses aren't even guaranteed. Not a good situation for a single mom of three.
  • The job is physically challenging on body with little to no breaks, and no benefits for massage or LTD coverage. I enjoy making a difference in the oral health of my clients and getting to know them.
  • I love my job. I like to work with people. I feel as though I make a difference in people's lives every day. I have a huge variety of patients. My office is very busy. Dental hygiene is a very rewarding career.
  • I love my job, the office/doctors I work for, and helping patients with their oral health and goals for continuing to keep their teeth healthy for a lifetime. I enjoy the schedule I have and my co-workers.
  • I like the wage and hours, but it causes me a lot of pain in my neck and shoulders. It is also very tedious, difficult to find open positions, and frustrating that patients generally have poor compliance with oral hygiene recommendations.
  • I enjoy my profession. I enjoy the fact that I get to meet new people all the time and build relationships with them. I love helping them and improving their education and practices to give them a healthier life. The profession also pays very well. The only negative aspects of my profession are the benefits, which are minimal if any. At times, the long hours can be frustrating as well. But overall I enjoy what I do and I love the doctor that I am employed for. He is very appreciative of all that we do for his office, and he respects our thoughts and decisions as well.
  • I love the dental hygiene profession!! I love treating patients and I love the leadership role I work in now.
  • I do not feel secure in this profession. I was an assistant/ front desk for six years, and I never worried about losing my job. Being a hygienist, I feel we are not treated as well and we can easily be replaced. Hygienists are well paid and the first in the office to have their hours cut if the patients do not show. I am finally at a good place in my career and I have the schedule that I want, but I feel I could lose it at the drop of a hat. I wish I did not feel this way, and never felt this way as an assistant. I hope a year from now I can say I truly trust the profession.
  • It's not possible to find a full-time job in one office. I don't get paid for sick days, holidays, or vacations and I get no benefits at all. Even if I could find full time work I'm not sure I could take it physically. I have chronic back and wrist pain. My doctor is constantly trying to cut my pay so I don't have a reliable income. I have to fight for basic equipment to keep my patients and myself safe. And lastly, the job is too repetitive. I do and say the exact same thing eight times a day.
  • I feel that my profession is respected, and well compensated. I enjoy working with people and helping them understand the importance of oral health. I feel personally and professionally fulfilled by my profession.
  • I enjoy my profession. It allows me to work at different offices, giving me a variety of opportunities, as well as make a decent salary working part time for now while my children are little. I feel I have the best of both worlds, and wouldn't change a thing.
  • I feel good that I promote health and a healthy lifestyle every day! Prevention is the secret to good health, and that is the very foundation of dental hygiene. Plus, the treatments we provide in dental hygiene are fairly natural — drugs or chemicals are hardly used. The physical debridement of the localized toxins is how we treat disease! Awesome!
  • I have been blessed to work for doctors who trust that we are fully capable and responsible for overseeing the periodontal health of our patients. I love educating my patients and helping them improve their oral and overall health by providing individualized care.
  • Yes, because I love being a hygienist. It's a career not just a job. When I graduated hygiene school in 2003 there were many job options and my college had a 100% placement rate. The pay, hours and benefits were great, but things have changed a lot and it's really scary! Sometimes I wish I went to nursing school, but I think all careers are suffering these days!
  • I thoroughly enjoy my profession. I love educating patients and helping them to achieve a beautiful healthy smile. I also enjoy the flexibility to temp at other offices if I need to. The hygiene field is really a mixed bag; on one hand, things are great, and on the other, things are challenging. Being that there are too many hygienists out there and not enough jobs which causes us to fall into a lower pay scale. Otherwise, I have absolutely no regrets!
  • This is not a good profession for a single mom; it's a great second income job. Too exhausting. Horrible benefits.
  • I almost answered differently, but I still feel that I positively impact my patients' lives. As a government employee, I have more job stability and benefits that most hygienists. And, I am attending school to complete my degree so I must still like my profession.
  • Ergonomics is horrible for my size and stature. Being petite is a huge challenge and not having the buying power for the patient's chair or any decision power in how the hygiene room is set up or equipped has caused me chronic pain for over three years. The dentist I work for is nice and I love the patients, but my right shoulder is at the verge of needing surgery after only doing hygiene for eight years.
  • I love what I do on a day to day. I do realize over the course of the last few years our profession has changed and has been presented with challenges of its own. I wish when in hygiene school they would have presented the idea that many offices do not hire full time. They hire part time so you may need more than one job.
  • Despite the days where I have disagreements with my boss over how long an appointment should take, what treatment is necessary, or what doctor a client sees, I still feel as though I've helped people appreciate the importance of their oral health and given them the tools necessary to help themselves.
  • I work in a pedo office, and I love what I do on a daily basis, even if most people don't follow through with my recommendations.
  • I love the dental field and enjoy educating my patients. I also love being a part of patient's oral health. To know that I have made a difference in our patient's oral health and that is awesome. I also love that I am able to set my own hours
  • I didn't realize that dental hygienists were look at so negatively by the dentists and staff. We are constantly being told to suck it up because there is always a replacement in the wings.
  • Our hygiene profession in recent years has seen a decline of respect and basic compensation for what we can attribute to our employer. Job shortage, cutting of hours, cutting days per week to work, cutting benefits, hiring two part-time hygienists to not have to offer benefits, only hiring temps to not have to pay employee tax or benefits and general lack of respect from the doctor in general.
