Arginine bicarbonate-calcium carbonate soft chews seal open dentinal tubules in hydraulic conductance test

Ortek Therapeutics Inc. announced on June 9, 2015, that their arginine bicarbonate- and calcium carbonate-containing soft chews were significantly effective in sealing open dentinal tubules in an in vitro hydraulic conductance test conducted at Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine.

The use of the hydraulic conductance method is a well-established test for evaluating an oral-care product's ability to treat dentinal sensitivity. The purpose of this test was to evaluate the reduction of dentinal fluid flow after a single fingertip application of an arginine bicarbonate and calcium carbonate soft chew confection applied to dentin disks in a dentinal tubular plugging simulator device.

The results of this evaluation demonstrate the ability of an arginine bicarbonate and calcium carbonate soft chew confection to physically seal open dentinal tubules. It was demonstrated that the soft chew significantly reduced the mobility of tubular fluid by occluding the orifices of the dentinal tubules. This was observed after a single fingertip application.
