For the past year, Henry Schein Practice Solutions has worked on building an imaging solution in partnership with DEXIS. This culminated in DEXIS for Dentrix Ascend, a cloud-based imaging solution designed to enhance dentists' digital clinical workflows, built exclusively for Dentrix Ascend. Henry Schein announced its availability during the 2016 Chicago Midwinter Meeting.

DEXIS for Dentrix Ascend helps practices quickly capture and store images to the cloud, eliminating the need for additional digital imaging software, and it also automates daily procedures, such as insurance billing, to enhance efficiency and productivity in dental practices.

The software, initially available to users in North America, offers practitioners four key benefits, including: (1) seamless integration with Dentrix Ascend; (2) enhanced digital workflow; (3) quick access to images from the cloud; and (4) automatic upgrades and backups that reduce the need for maintenance and hardware. In addition, because DEXIS for Dentrix Ascend is built into Dentrix Ascend, practices no longer need to leave Dentrix Ascend and open a separate application to capture, store, and manipulate images. With the cloud-based system, patient x-rays and intraoral images are available to all authorized devices and users on the system from any location, saving time for clinical procedures.

During the Chicago Midwinter Meeting, DentistryIQ Products Editor Erin Robinson spoke with Adam McDaniel, Dentrix Ascend product manager for Henry Schein Practice Solutions, about how DEXIS for Dentrix Ascend can benefit dentists. According to McDaniel, dentists who use the software to streamline their workflow could save an estimated 20–30 minutes per day on average, which could potentially amount to as much as $50,000 per year in increased production.

Furthermore, the average dentist loses approximately $100 per day on x-ray codes that are never added to the office's practice management system. With DEXIS for Dentrix Ascend, that process is simplified. With its digital clinical workflow, it posts automatically to patients' financial records, and it is the only imaging system that has American Dental Association procedure codes tied in. "We've blurred the lines between practice management and imaging," said McDaniel.

In addition to improving productivity and efficiency, the cloud-based system captures original digital images and uploads them (not copies of images) with virtually no loss of quality due to a compression algorithm that provides fast upload speeds to help maintain image quality. Once in the cloud, the images can be edited using a variety of tools, including filters, annotation, and density reading.

Users of DEXIS for Dentrix Ascend have been impressed with its capabilities. "DEXIS for Dentrix Ascend has helped make our practice's insurance billing more efficient. I also really like having the ability to remotely view, with clarity, an x-ray from anywhere when consulting with patients or colleagues," said Dr. Mau Nguyen, Newport Commons Dental Care.
