Product review: Goby electric toothbrush

You know those patients who could benefit from an electric toothbrush but might not be able to afford one, or those patients who don't change their toothbrush heads nearly often enough? This product might meet their needs.

You know those patients who could benefit from an electric toothbrush but might not be able to afford one, or those patients who don't change their toothbrush heads nearly often enough? This product might meet their needs.

We all know that electric toothbrushes are more effective at plaque removal than manual toothbrushes, and we all have our favorites for one reason or another, but many patients find electric toothbrushes to be cost prohibitive. We discuss oral hygiene practices with our patients at every dental hygiene appointment, and I am astounded by how many patients do not change their brush heads in a timely and routine fashion. Many forget, and some try to stretch out the time interval due to the cost of the brush heads.

I was recently introduced to Goby, an electric toothbrush that is available at a fraction of the cost of many other electric toothbrushes on the market. It has a design that is familiar to me. A small, round brush head oscillates back and forth, and a single button is used to turn the brush on and off and to change the setting from standard to sensitive. The brush alerts the brusher to move on to another quadrant every 30 seconds and automatically shuts off after two minutes. The brush has a sleek design that is available in a variety of colors, including a very fancy, limited edition, all-black toothbrush.

The Goby toothbrush's charging unit is small and easy to clean, and it can be used with a standard wall plug or USB. The battery life is impressive. I have a habit of brushing between four and six minutes, so I expect to charge my electric toothbrush more frequently than a person who brushes for two minutes. My Goby electric toothbrush has held a charge for two weeks, despite my overbrushing!

Goby electric toothbrushes are available to patients directly from the website, or dental professionals can purchase brushes to distribute in their offices. Goby offers flexible purchasing options, including a single purchase option and a one-, two-, or three-month subscription option for brush head replacements. A new brush head will arrive at your home automatically—no more forgetting to change toothbrush heads!

Goby is a New York–based company that has partnered with New York University College of Dentistry’s Global Student Outreach Program. Goby donates a percentage of all sales to help provide dental services to people in the United States and around the world.

For dental professionals or patients who are seeking a quality electric toothbrush that encourages brushing for an adequate amount of time and changing toothbrush heads at regular intervals for a reasonable cost, check out Goby!
