My husband and I have frequent conversations with our 11-year old daughter about being a leader. Our common line is, “Be a leader, not a follower.” She looks at us like we fell off Mars but I know the concept is sinking into her brilliant brain.
I found John Maxwell’s line above, “Vision: The Difference Between Followers and Leaders” as a headline in a leadership book sent to me by a dear friend.
It struck a deep belief in me that we can shape our own career path. We just need to know what that looks like. We need vision! I always knew that I wanted to own my own business. I had no idea it would be an independent hygiene practice. My work circumstances prepared me to execute my vision. I mastered my hygiene skills, learned the business of dentistry, cultivated my communication skills, and wouldn’t take no for an answer. I had a vision and I went for it. I became a leader.
Some of you may be thinking, “I just want a good paying job where I am respected!” How do you achieve that vision?

Some of you may be thinking, “I want to move into sales or speaking.” That requires vision as well. Create and cultivate relationships with your vendors. If you want to become a speaker, dig deep, find your passion, and then create a program that differentiates yourself from all other speakers. Become a leader with your passion.
Are you a leader or a follower? Do you have a vision for your life and career? Can you put it into clear, concise language with measurable goals? Don’t expect things to be handed to you; instead, pull up your big girl/boy boots and make it happen! As Thomas Willhite wrote, “To back down from fears, doubts, and failure is the way of the follower. To face them and go on stronger is the way of the leader.”
