Cross contamination between patients is possible when patients close their lips around a saliva ejector and form a seal. Fluid left in the suction line can then be drawn back into a patient's mouth. With the Crosstex product, venting channels are incorporated along the full length of the tip so that it is impossible for patients to form a seal around the saliva ejector when they close their mouths causing reverse flow. An additional benefit is that the tip also prevents the suction of soft tissue, which can result in hematomas. The Safety Saliva Ejector is the only saliva ejector that is designed to prevent backflow from occurring and one of the few products designed specifically to address this problem.
