ADA installs new president, officers, trustees
Charles H. Norman III, DDS of Greensboro, N.C., was recently installed as the 2013-2014 president of the American Dental Association (ADA) during the ADA's Annual Session in New Orleans.
Maxine Feinberg, DDS, was chosen as the ADA's new president-elect, Jonathan Shenkin, DDS, as second vice president, and Gary E. Jeffers, DMD, Alvin W. Stevens Jr., DMD, and Andrew T. Kwasny, DMD, were chosen as new members of the ADA Board of Trustees.
Dr. Norman will lead the 157,000-member ADA for one year. Prior to becoming president, Dr. Norman served as the ADA's president-elect from 2012-2013. A 1977 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Dentistry, Dr. Norman shares a dental practice with his son, Dr. Matt Norman in Greensboro, N.C.
Dr. Feinberg will serve as president-elect for one year and will assume the role of president of the ADA in October 2014. Dr. Feinberg formerly served as Fourth District Trustee to the ADA House of Delegates and is a former president of the New Jersey Dental Association, the first woman to serve in that position. A graduate of New York University and the New York University College of Dentistry, Dr. Feinberg maintains a private practice in periodontics in Cranford, N.J.
3M ESPE appoints Kathy Gaertner as Director of US Marketing and Business Operations
3M ESPE recently announced that Kathy Gaertner has been promoted to Director of U.S. Marketing and Business Operations. She will now oversee 3M ESPE's domestic marketing efforts, business operations, and relatinoships with distributors.
"Kathy has been an indispensable member of the 3M ESPE management team for the past 15 years, and we are excited for her to apply her expertise in sales, marketing, management, and key accounts to her new role," said Mark Farmer, presidents, 3M ESPE.
Gaertner was most recently the Direct Solutions Global Business Team Leader, overseeing one of the largest categories of 3M ESPE's dental business.
2013 Give Kids A Smile awardees honored
Two dedicated supporters of the Give Kids A Smile (GKAS) program – Candy B. Ross of KaVo Kerr Group and Kathy L. Woodard of the Ohio Dental Association – were recipients of the Give Kids A Smile "Smile Champion" Awards, presented at the American Dental Association Foundation's Give Kids A Smile Gala during the ADA's Annual Session in New Orleans on November 1.
The award recognizes the winners' efforts to expand the GKAS program to reach even more underserved children across the country. Give Kids A Smile is the American Dental Association's signature national program that provides free dental screenings, treatment and education to underserved children. Since its founding more than 11 years ago, GKAS has provided dental services for nearly 4.5 million children. Each award winner received a commemorative crystal trophy.
In addition to celebrating Give Kids A Smile, the event recognized ADA President Robert Faiella and other ADA luminaries, including trustees and board officers.
Give Kids A Smile is made possible through the efforts of volunteers, including 110,000 dentists and 335,000 other volunteers ranging from dental hygienists, dental technicians, teachers, parents, and school nurses to other community health professionals. In addition, several partners provide funding and in-kind product support. Henry Schein Dental is the exclusive provider of professional dental products, and Colgate is the exclusive provider of consumer dental products. DEXIS, CareCredit, and 3M ESPE have also provided major support for the program.
Since the establishment of the Give Kids A Smile Fund, the ADA Foundation has made grants in support of the program in excess of $1 million.
DTAF awards nearly $200,000 in grants
The Dental Trade Alliance Foundation (DTAF) awarded $189,500 in grants to provide funding for innovative oral health programs aimed at encouraging changes in consumer behavior, improving access, and enhancing the efficiency of the oral health care system.
These eight programs received up to $25,000 in grant funding from DTAF: University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of Dental Medicine (Improved Access to Oral Care through Increased Oral Health Literacy), Pennsylvania Head Start Association (The Pennsylvania Age One Connect the Dots Pilot Project), Southwest Health and Human Services (4-H Project), Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania (Books, Brushing, and Bedtime), Case Western Reserve University (Oral Health Patient Navigation for Underserved Populations), Care Free Medical, Inc. (Pay It Forward Dental Access Initiative), The Children's Oral Health Institute (Lessons In A Lunch Box Road Map: Guidelines to Introduce the Program in Public Schools), and – in collaboration with the Dental Lifeline Network – Howard University (An Innovative Approach to Inter-professional Oral Care for the Elderly).
The DTAF has awarded over a million dollars in grant funding to over 50 different innovative projects since 2002. Past recipients have used DTAF seed money for innovative programs designed to improve the access to and productivity of the oral health care system by identifying, nurturing, and leveraging promising projects.
American Academy of Implant Dentistry recognizes outstanding dentists
The American Academy of Implant Dentistry recognized three dentists with the highest awards given by the Academy during its recently concluded 62nd Annual Meeting.
Emile Martin, DDS, FAAID, DABOI/ID, of Syracuse, N.Y., was named the recipient of the Aaron Gershkoff/Norman Goldberg Memorial Award. An honored fellow of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry and a diplomat of the American Board of Oral Implantology/Implant Dentistry, Dr. Martin is a past president of the AAID and its Foundation, as well as a fellow and past president of the Academy of Laser Dentistry. He is the recipient of the Academy of General Dentistry Life Time Learning and Service Recognition Award.
The 2013 recipient of the Isaih Lew Memorial Research Award was Ulf Me Wikesjö, DDS, DMD, PhD, of Augusta, GA. He currently serves as professor of periodontics and oral biology, College of Dental Medicine, Georgia Regents University. Dr. Wikesjö is the founding director of Sweden's Laboratory for Applied Periodontal and Craniofacial Regeneration, and was the 2008 winner of the prestigious U.S. Prix Galien Award for Best Biotechnology Product. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Periodontology and is the author of more than 190 original articles, reviews, and chapters of referenced scientific journals and texts.
David Resnick, DDS, FAAID, DABOI/ID of Ada, Minn., was named the recipient of the inaugural Paul Johnson Service Award to acknowledge AAID members whose volunteer efforts have been above and beyond the norm. He is an honored fellow of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry and a diplomat of the American Board of Oral Implantology/Implant Dentistry. Dr. Resnick served six years on the Membership Committee and continues his tenure on the Admissions & Credentials Board. His efforts on behalf of the Academy's Central District have been instrumental in the resurgence of that district.
3M Files patent infringement lawsuits in Germany
As part of its ongoing program to license 3M's patented technology that enables the coloring of ceramic-based dental restorations to the dental industry, and to protect its technology against unlicensed users, 3M has filed two patent infringement lawsuits in Düsseldorf.
The first lawsuit is against Metoxit AG, and alleges infringement of 3M's patent rights by coloring liquids sold under the brands Z-CADTMFlowPenTM and Z-CADTM Liquid HD, as well as zirconia CAD/CAM blocks sold under the brand Z-CADTM.
The second lawsuit is against White Peaks Dental Systems GmbH & Co. KG and alleges infringement of 3M's patent rights by coloring liquids sold under the brands CopranColorTM, CopranUltra-T ColorTM, and MonolithColorTM, as well as zirconia CAD/CAM blocks sold under the Copran ZrTM brand.
3M's patented technology enables the coloring of unshaded ceramics by color-matching dental restorations to the natural color of patients' teeth. 3M has licensed its patents to much of the dental industry, including Vita Zahnfabrik H. Rauter GmbH & Co. KG, and Vident, Inc., Dentsply Prosthetics U.S. LLC and Dentsply International Inc., Zirkonzahn GmbH, Wieland Dental + Technik GmbH & Co. KG, and Ivoclar Vivadent AG. Through these licensees, patients around the world enjoy the benefits of dental restorations matching the natural color of their teeth. 3M remains open to licensing this technology to other interested parties.
3M is committed to improving oral care through continuous R&D investments. The company's dental division, 3M ESPE, has been recognized as the most innovative dental company for the past eight years by the Anaheim Group. This distinction is awarded based on the number of patent filings, 510k clearances and new product introductions.
Whip Mix hosts Survive or Thrive Digital forum
Whip Mix hosted the second annual Survive or Thrive Digital Forum on October 10-11. The two-day forum brought together over 30 lab owners from around the country, who were able to develop a better understanding of the dental laboratory industry's transition into the digital age. They acquired valuable knowledge in the necessary steps their lab should take in making that transition. Featured guest speakers included Chuck Yenkner, Executive Director of the IdentAlloy Council, Mark Jackson, RDT and owner of Precision Ceramics Dental Laboratory, Dr. Russell Giordano, Associate Professor and Director of Biomaterials at the Boston University and Al Fillastre, CDT and owner of Ceram-O-Arts Dental Lab.'
Carestream sponsors American Academy of Periodontology Foundation
Carestream Dental is pleased to announce another successful year of sponsoring the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) Foundation in support of the Dr. D. Walter Cohen Teaching Award, which was presented at the American Academy of Periodontology's (AAP) 2013 Annual Meeting. The meeting took place at the Philadelphia Convention Center in Philadelphia from September 27 to October 1. The 2013 award winner was Jonathan H. Do, DDS, a graduate of the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Dentistry.
According to the AAP Foundation, the number of qualified periodontal professors is decreasing. Most graduates feel the pressure of student loans or other obligations and bypass a teaching career to go directly into practice. To address this growing concern, the AAP Foundation offers a $10,000 award to jumpstart the teaching career of a deserving periodontal student.
After living with an undiagnosed case of periodontitis through his teenage years, Dr. Do is passionate about teaching dental students the importance of correctly diagnosing and treating periodontitis and knowing when it's appropriate to refer a patient to a periodontist. Dr. Do plans to use the Dr. D. Walter Cohen Teaching Award to further his studies and aid him in his new position as a professor in UCLA's periodontology department.
"The American Academy of Periodontology Foundation wants to ensure a bright future for periodontology by strengthening our future generations of students and educators," said Dr. Robert Vitas, executive director of the AAP Foundation.
Candy Ross of KaVo Kerr Group honored
Candy Ross, Director of Industry and Professional Relations for KaVo Kerr Group, NA Equipment, has been awarded with two honors: the Steven W. Kess Give Kids a Smile Corporate Volunteer Award and the Haskell Pitluck Award.
The first is for her dedication to the program. She first became involved in 2002 and was instrumental in involving DEXIS to the program. Since then, she has maintained a relationship with GKAS.
The second award was from the Directors of the American Board of Forensiv Odontology (ABFO). Candy is the third recipient of the Haskell Potluck Award, issued to non-odontologists who have served the ABFO community in a positive way.
"I am sincerely humbled by both these awards," Ross said. "I am very fortunate to work with both of these groups and for a company that recognizes and supports its civic responsibility to give back to these entities and the dental community as a whole. Without the company's support over the years, I would not have received these honors."
Dental Trade Alliance Foundation awards scholarships
The Dental Trade Alliance Foundation (DTAF) and the Robert J. Sullivan Family Foundation award two DTAF/Sullivan Family Foundation Dentistry Scholarships to Sarah R. Usher, a sutdetn at A.T. Still University, Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health, and Chelsea E. Wong, a student at UC San Francisco School of Dentistry. Additionally, the DTAF and the Dr. Edward B. Shils Entrepreneurial Fund awarded two scholarships to Eric Chen, Loma Linda University School of Dentistry, and Rachael L. D'Souza of the University of Nevada Las Vegas School of Dental Medicine. All scholarships were $5,000 per recipient.
The scholarships are meant to recognize and provide financial support to third or fourth year dental students who have demonstrated academic excellence in dentistry, financial need, and a commitment to community service.
In memory of Robert C. Foyle
Robert C. Foyle, 67, of Elkhart, died October 28, 2013, in Akron, Ohio. He was born May 22, 1946, in Hawthorne, N.J., to Joseph and Mary (Cunningham) Foyle. He married Jane Julian in 1969. She preceded him in death in 1993. He then married Ellen Fuller in 1996. She preceded him in death in 2009. In 2013 two grandchildren preceded him in death, Jack and Cate Foyle. He retired from Heraeus Kulzer in 2006 as general manager. From 1999-2002 he was vice president of sales for Oralis Inc., and from 1974-1992 worked in various management positions for Miles Laboratories. Robert was the past president of Dental Manufacturers of America. He served on the board of directors of DMA. and was a member of American Dental Trade Association, Oral Health America and IARA. In memory of Philip S. McElfresh
Philip (Phil) McElfresh died while mountain biking with friends on November 10, 2013. He was 55 years old.
Phil was a member of the dental community for 15 years. His most recent position was as the western regional sales manager for Dentsply International.
He is survived by his wife, Lori, and daughter, Erin, as well as his mother, father, brother and sister.
A memorial fund has been established at the Coconino Federal Credit Union in his name. Donations can be made to account number 40966 to go toward his daughter's continuing education in the medical field.
