In business since 1947, Pulpdent must be doing something right. Still a family-owned business, Pulpdent serves the dental profession worldwide. They manufacture their wide range of "patient-pleasing" products at facilities in Watertown, Mass. The company can boast of "early contributions to vital pulp therapy and root canal therapy to its recent developments in hydrophilic, self-adhesive restorative resins that take advantage of the moisture that is ever-present in the mouth."

Now Pulpdent is adding bioactive material to the list of new directions forged. Connie Lorich Kugel, professional relations and marketing manager, shared with me their plans to release a new product line called ACTIVA BioACTIVE on February 1, 2014. "We are moving toward materials that are working with the oral environment rather than just letting them be neutral," she said.

ACTIVA BioACTIVE products are composite resins that are more bioactive and release more fluoride than glass ionomers. They are the first dental restoratives with a bioactive resin matrix, a shock-absorbing resin component, and bioactive glass fillers that mimic the physical and chemical properties of natural teeth and deliver direct long-term benefits to your patients.

Connie says that while Pulpdent has been on "the forefront of preventive materials and restorative solutions, up until now the industry has always just made do with filling a hole in teeth and hoping that there are no negative effects of the materials used. Pulpdent says, ‘we can do better than that!"

ACTIVA BioACTIVE Restorative and ACTIVA BioACTIVE Base/Liner are already scheduled to make a debut appearance at a number of big meetings in 2014, like the Yankee Dental Meeting, Chicago Midwinter, and the ADA – to name a few.

"Education is the biggest part of our focus in the product release" Connie went on. "It's so important to give meaningful information on what ‘bioactive material' means and what all it can do. We will be providing a whole new set of courses that will be fresh for everyone. I already have 75 education courses scheduled for 2014 to be taught by some major opinion leaders in the industry."

It seems that everyone being presented with the new ACTIVA BioACTIVE absolutely loves it. Pulpdent is already receiving some early green lights from the FDA and is excited about the future of this trail-blazing product line. Look for the product debut on February 1, 2014.
