NYU College of Dentistry to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Week with a Black History Month Oral Health Day

As part of the Martin Luther King Jr./Black History Oral Health Day on Saturday, February 1, at the Harlem State Office building, the New York University College of Dentisry Dental Van will provide complimentary oral screenings to adults and children.

The New York University College of Dentistry (NYUCD) Office of Student Affairs — in collaboration with the NYS Assemblyman Keith Wright, NY City Councilwoman Inez Dickens, and Vice President Allen McFarlane of NYU’s Office of Student Diversity Programs and Services — will sponsor The Martin Luther King Jr. /Black History Oral Health Day on Saturday, February 12, from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Harlem State Office building.

The NYUCD Dental Van will provide complimentary oral screenings to adults and children. Assemblyman Keith Wright and Vice President Allen McFarlane will make an appearance at 12:00 noon to open the day. The event will be held in front of the Harlem State Office building at 125th street between 7th and Lenox.

MLK Week 2011 at New York University is scheduled for Feb. 7-12, 2011. This year they will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1961 visit of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to the campus. It was on February 10 when Dr. King met with members of the NYU community during a three-hour visit. After lunch with student leaders and meeting campus officials, Dr. King delivered a speech titled, “The Future of Integration.”

About the NYUCD Dental Van — Launched in early 2000, NYU’s Smiling Faces, Going Places dental van is the first dental facility on wheels to travel throughout New York City and beyond to treat children living in federally designated health professional shortage areas. Each day the van travels to a public school, Head Start Program, community health center, or facility for the developmentally disabled to provide comprehensive preventive, educational, and primary health services intended to improve the oral health and overall well-being of poor and low-income children.
