WEST ALLIS, WIS., Aug. 30, 2012 - The Wisconsin Dental Association Foundation is now accepting applications for its new Smile Program aimed at providing underprivileged children, adults and seniors with the personal oral hygiene supplies needed to put them on the track toward good dental health.

The WDA Foundation’s goal is to provide toothbrushes and toothpaste to Wisconsin nonprofit organizations that serve at-risk populations. Grants of these personal oral hygiene tools will be awarded semi-annually in April and October.

To be considered for a Smile Program grant, nonprofits should focus on intervention with early care, educational information or support and providing tools for positive behavior.

“One of the most important elements of tooth care happens at home,” explains WDA Foundation President Dr. Anthony Sciascia, a general dentist in Mondovi, Wis.

“Brushing and flossing properly, along with regular dental checkups by a doctor of oral health, can help prevent tooth decay and gum disease, resulting in improved health and self-esteem,” he adds.

According to the 2010 Burden of Oral Disease in Wisconsin report issued by the state’s Department of Health Services, the most common oral diseases among both adults and children are tooth decay and periodontal disease. These oral diseases can affect basic functions like eating and talking and negatively impact work and school attendance and productivity.

Applications must be received no later than 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 1 (fall cycle) and April 1 (spring cycle). To apply, visit the WDA Foundation section on WDA.org.

The Smile Program is administered through the WDA Foundation with the generous support of the Marquette University School of Dentistry Alumni Association.
