Boston University’s Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine will initiate an all-digital dental school, according to an announcement by the school’s dean, Dr. Jeffrey Hutter.

Boston University’s fully digital student workflow will include both dental and laboratory techniques. Dr. Hutter made the announcement during the American Dental Association's annual session in San Antonio after the dental school reached an agreement with Sirona Dental Systems.

Dr. Hutter said “we’re taking the lead on this” by initiating the “historic agreement” for the digital curriculum, which he said will supplement the traditional curriculum offered by the Boston dental school. He said the digital applications offered by Sirona would “fine tune” the skills of students before entering “patient centers.” The dean said the digital transformation was the result of two tasks forces set up after the school’s 50th anniversary, and the decision was reached to “seamlessly integrate digital dentistry” during coursework.

A press statement released by Sirona explained, “The task force set put with a goal to provide students with all of the tools needed for comprehensive treatment plans and efficient delivery of the highest level al oral health care using digital dental technologies. It evaluated the necessary facilities, equipment, and technical support required to create a seamless, all-inclusive system.”

The school’s agreement with Sirona will equip dental students with equipment such as Cerec, Schick, Galileos, and inLab product lines.

Jeffrey Slovin, CEO of Sirona, said, “Students will get to experience the true workings of a current dental practice environment, and we commend the university for leading the way towards educating its students using digital dentistry techniques.”
