Oct. 30, 2012
FOCUS Editorial Director Maria Perno Goldie, RDH, MS, ushers in November by addressing four events that will be recognized in the next 30 days-- American Diabetes Month, Lung Cancer Awareness Month, and The 37th Great American Smokeout, set for Nov. 15. She also highlights an OSHA webinar slated for Nov. 8 titled “War on Dental Water Biofilm.”

Is it possible that your waterline bottle changes color? Not sure when to “shock” your system? What is considered healthy water? These and many more questions will be answered in a webinar designed for all dental personnel. Pat Pine will conduct the webinar titled, "War on Dental Water Biofilm," on Thursday, Nov. 8, 2012. The course offers 1 CEU for attendance. The fee is $25, and attendees receive a few six-page Waterline Resource Chart for registering. Review course information here.(1)

The webinar will focus on the good, the bad and the ugly of biofilms that hold our waterlines hostage. According to Pat, patients are the lifelines to our practices. Dental hygiene and dental clinicians are their first line of defense to health, oral and physical. Legionella disease exists; how does it reach our waterlines? The webinar will provide ammunition to fight waterline biofilm.

You can prevent biofilm from infecting your water systems by understanding and recognizing the risk of disease transmission. You will be taught how to integrate waterline maintenance with confidence, and discover when to shock your waterlines. You will be able to formulate a plan for routine maintenance, and learn about product choices to maintain healthy waterlines.

November is American Diabetes Month. Here are some recent statistics on diabetes: Nearly 26 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes; Another 79 million Americans have prediabetes and are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes; The American Diabetes Association estimates that the total national cost of diagnosed diabetes in the United States is $174 billion.(2) There are fact sheets and resources available.(3)
