While many in the dental industry, including the leadership and membership of the Dental Trade Alliance, is hoping that a proposed medical device tax will not come to fruition, President Barack Obama seems set on ensuring the tax will happen ... on schedule.

Speaking to WCCO-TV, President Obama said he would not support delaying the implementation of the 2.3 percent tax increase on medical device company revenues (which is also expected to impact the dental industry). The Dental Trade Alliance remains strongly opposed to the tax, regardless of a delay or not.

"DTA continues to fight for elimination of the tax. We maintain that the tax is a bad idea for dental businesses that do not stand to benefit from increased dental health coverage under the reform law. Delaying a ‘bad idea’ doesn’t change the fact that it’s a bad idea," Gary Price, DTA president and chief executive officer, said in a recent letter to his membership.
