The trip to this week’s ADHA Annual Session in Las Vegas is the start of a busy travel schedule for FOCUS Editorial Director Maria Perno Goldie, RDH, MS. Following the ADHA session in Las Vegas, she journeys to Japan then speaks to the Korean Dental Hygienists’ Association. But before departing, Goldie discusses recent findings about pain tolerance and emerging trends in dental hygiene.
When you read this, I will be at the ADHA Annual Session and Center for Lifelong Learning. I hope you are, too! For more information, visit the website.(1-5) There is information on registration, a mobile app, and more! This issue contains information on HIPAA, Security Risk Assessment, the mouthwash and cancer issue, nutrition news, and point-of-care testing. Researchers have identified important genes that may explain how some people have a higher tolerance for pain than others. The study was presented to the American Academy of Neurology’s 66th Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, April 26 to May 3, 2014.(6) Nine percent of the participants had low pain perception, 46 percent had moderate pain perception and 45 percent had high pain perception. The researchers found that a gene variant was 33 percent more prevalent in the low pain group than in the high pain group. Among those with a moderate pain perception, the certain gene variants were 19-25 percent more frequently discovered than in those with a high pain perception. A certain variant (DRD2) was 25 percent more common among those with a high pain perception compared to people with moderate pain.(6) Another paper presented showed that narrowing of the carotid artery in the neck without any symptoms may be linked to problems in learning, memory, thinking and decision-making, compared to people with similar risk factors but no narrowing in the neck artery.(6)

Have a wonderful July 4, and stay safe. Let’s enjoy our family and friends, and try to remember the spirit of the day. Independence. Freedom. A right to live and worship how we see fit. But freedom is not free. Let’s remember to express our gratitude to all in the military, past and present, for defending our personal freedoms. And thanks to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, and their families.RELATED | ADHA announces contest winners
