Researchers have identified important genes that may explain how some people have a higher tolerance for pain than others. The study was presented to the American Academy of Neurology’s 66th Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, April 26 to May 3, 2014.(6) Nine percent of the participants had low pain perception, 46 percent had moderate pain perception and 45 percent had high pain perception. The researchers found that a gene variant was 33 percent more prevalent in the low pain group than in the high pain group. Among those with a moderate pain perception, the certain gene variants were 19-25 percent more frequently discovered than in those with a high pain perception. A certain variant (DRD2) was 25 percent more common among those with a high pain perception compared to people with moderate pain.(6) Another paper presented showed that narrowing of the carotid artery in the neck without any symptoms may be linked to problems in learning, memory, thinking and decision-making, compared to people with similar risk factors but no narrowing in the neck artery.(6)
