Letter from Carol Martin about February 2015 C.A.R.E. trip to Honduras

July 3, 2014
In February 2015, a team of volunteers will be traveling to Honduras to provide dental care to the Department of Valle. The team will be a part of the Central American Relief Efforts (C.A.R.E.) group. Carol Martin, BSDH, PHDHP, who will coordinate the volunteers, is seeking dental supplies for the trip, as well as people (hygienists, dentists, dental assistants) to serve on the team.

June 17, 2014

In February 2015, a team of volunteers will be traveling to Honduras to provide much-needed dental care to those in great need in the Department of Valle. This is a new area for our team, and we will be traveling to them due to a request from the Mayors of the communities. These communities have never had dental care, so we will be very busy. It is anticipated we will see 2,500-3,000 people. For this trip, we are looking for 3-4 dentists, 8-10 dental hygienists, and 2-3 dental assistants.

As this trip starts to unfold, there are still supplies that are needed. If you, your doctor, or corporate reps are willing to make a donation, please let me know. You can send an email to me at: [email protected] and I will then send you my mailing address. All supplies need to be on the shipping container by October 1, 2014, for our projected October 15th release of the container.

For any products sent, if you include a receipt, we will in turn send you a tax receipt. If you are unable to send products, but would still like to help, you can send a tax-deductible donation and we will then purchase the supplies. You can again email me at the above email address and I’ll forward you the donation form.

Requested dental supplies:

1. Anesthetic: Lidocaine, Mepivicaine, Septocaine
2. Needles: 30 gauge blue, 27 gauge yellow
3. Surgical instruments: This is a huge need area—if you are interested, send me an email and I’ll forward a specific list to you
4. Gelfoam (2 jars needed)
5. Sutures: 3.0 chromic gut sutures (6-7 boxes needed)
6. Syringes—aspirating (4 needed)
7. Blades: 12 and 15 for a handle OR disposable units would be good
8. Antibiotics: Amoxicillin (250 mg), Ibuprofen
