Want to help those in need right in your community? Dentistry from the Heart a good option

April 6, 2015
Dentistry from the Heart is 14 years old and gaining in popularity and people helped as more dental practices take part in offering free dental care to those in need in their communities.

A quick glance at the Dentistry From the Heart website reveals that dentists across the nation are giving back to their communities by providing free dentistry to those in need. Along with other charitable events such as Missions of Mercy, Dentistry from the Heart gives dentists and their teams a chance to offer free dentistry, but from their office instead of a central location, and on a day of their choosing.

In 2001, Dr. Vincent Monticciolo started Dentistry from the Heart as a way to give back to the community and provide aid to the growing number of Americans without dental insurance. Dentistry from the Heart has grown to include over 200 annual events nationwide and around the world. As of early 2015, more than 80,000 people over the age of 18 had been served, receiving free extractions, fillings, and cleanings. (Gives Kids a Smile is the charitable dental event from children.)

One dentist taking part in the event serves from the homebase of DentistryIQ and Dental Economics – Dr. Mark Davis of Perfect Smiles of Tulsa, pictured left. Dr. Davis found out about the event through a management group, and began participating two years ago. The practice’s next event is April 17.

“I joined to share the abundance that the Tulsa community has given me over the past 30 years,” said Dr. Davis. “Last year 40 or our staff members participated, and we served 110 people. We hope to increase that number this year.”

Taking part in the event has reminded Dr. Davis and the Perfect Smiles staff that there is still a long way to go toward achieving healthy mouths in the U.S., especially as companies choose to opt out of offering dental benefits to employees. The staff enjoys being able to help people who cannot afford regular dental care take steps toward that goal.

“Our staff really enjoys the event,” Dr. Davis said. “Many doctors and dentists go to other countries to help people, but I’ve seen in my volunteer work at Tulsa’s Catholic Charities and the DFTH event last year that the need for dental care is just as great right here in Tulsa, Oklahoma. We can fill a need very nicely, and we don’t need passports. I highly recommend dental staffs setting aside a day to take part in Dentistry from the Heart.”
