Forward Science announced that its product for the treatment of xerostomia and mucositis, SalivaMax, is commercially available in February 2016.

SalivaMAX is a prescription strength rinse, and, according to the company, the product “provides a Complete Oral Wellness Program” for clinicians:

  • Oral cancer screening (OralID)
  • Diagnostic tests (CytID, PathID, hpvID)
  • pH monitoring (phID)
  • Treatment (SalivaMAX).

Dr. Brian Pikkula, president and chief technology officer for Forward Science, said, “The data has proven that supersaturated calcium phosphate rinses are an effective treatment for xerostomic and mucositic patients. We wanted to give the patient population an opportunity to benefit from a prescription strength, affordable option with SalivaMAX. We are excited for every office, from general dental offices to large oncology centers, to start utilizing SalivaMAX for their patient care.”

SalivaMAX is artificial saliva that is provided in single-use packets. SalivaMAX is comprised of powdered ingredients that, when mixed with one ounce of water, forms a supersaturated calcium phosphate solution. Patients swish with SalivaMAX for one minute, and it can be administered several times per day, depending on the dry mouth severity.

SalivaMAX is available by prescription only. Forward Science said its patient assistance program could dramatically reduce out of pocket costs for those who qualify.
