Field of dreams

July 1, 2005
Here we are in the middle of summer - baseball, family time, vacations, and school shopping right around the corner.

Here we are in the middle of summer - baseball, family time, vacations, and school shopping right around the corner. Growing up a Cardinals fan, I have always enjoyed our national pastime both as a spectator and a player (actually softball in my day). My field of dreams was in full swing this June when I was invited to Ivoclar’s “Turn Pro” event. This event launched the company’s ProCad milling block. Imagine dentists playing ball, taking batting practice, throwing and running the bases in a minor league ballpark. Even baseball cards were made for us to trade! It was a homerun experience watching the “player” in all of us come out - whether batting, card swapping, or receiving encouragement from the coaches. My hat’s off to Ivoclar for providing a first class line-up of fun and learning!

This issue is loaded with everyday practical cases and treatment choices that will give you and your team insight into clinical excellence. Our lead-off batter, Dr. Kristy Vetter - winner of the Woman Dentist Journal Xtreme Practice Makeover - and her team members catch us up with their roster of products and how they are using them. Learn about taking easier impressions from the top of the line-up, Dr. Rena Vakay, improved esthetics through crown lengthening from utility specialist, Dr. Ivy Batos, and the esthetic bullpen of Lava, Empress, and CEREC. Our rotation finishes with a great interview with Dr. Joyce Bassett on her passion and commitment to teaching women dentists. The Woman Dentist Journal bench also offers the expertise of buying and selling a practice and a very current update on disability insurance with the woman dentist in mind.

When I met our cover dentist, Dr. Susan Hollar, instead of asking for an autograph, I requested that she tell her “story.” Anyone who meets Susan immediately recognizes what a grand slam dentist she is. In the article “Leaps of faith,” she details how her education patterns and choices created her professional future of practice, family, and balance. We all can learn from her tips in positioning.

I don’t know about you, but this summer has been incredibly busy, yet enjoyable. How much better does life get than shuffling kids to and from games, practices, and time with their friends? And what about Mom? Well, she’s ready to play ball!

Here’s to a summer ready for time to relax, reflect, and renew!
