The American Academy of Periodontology supports the American Heart Association's scientific statement "Periodontal Disease and Atherosclerotic Vascular Disease: Does the Evidence Support an Independent Association?" recently published in Circulation. The statement concludes that observational studies to date support an association between periodontal disease and cardiovascular disease, independent of shared risk factors.
The American Dental Association Council on Scientific Affairs agrees with the conclusions of a recent report that current scientific evidence does not establish a direct cause and effect relationship between periodontal disease and heart disease or stroke. Additionally, the evidence does not establish that periodontal disease increases the rate of heart disease or stroke.
A protein involved in cellular inflammation may increase the risk of plaque-containing blood vessels associated with inflammatory periodontal disease, according to research presented at the American Heart Association's Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology 2012 Scientific Sessions in Chicago.
A new scientific statement published in Circulation, an American Heart Association journal, says despite popular belief, periodontal disease has not been proven to cause atherosclerotic heart disease or stroke, and treating it hasn't been proven to prevent heart disease or stroke either.
A bacterium, thought to be common in the oral cavity, has the potential to cause serious disease if it enters the bloodstream. Scientists have identified the bacterium and can now research how it causes disease and evaluate its risks.
