Take the bite out of pet health risks: Pet Dental Health Month points out the most common problem.

By Kim Brown, Tulsa World, Okla.

Feb. 8--It's time to think about your pets' pearly, or not so pearly, whites.

February is Pet Dental Health Month, and the American Veterinary Medical Association urges you to brush up on your pets' dental hygiene.

"Most people have no idea that dental health is so important to their pets, and that's why Pet Dental Health Month is such a great idea," explains Dr. Larry Corry, president of the American Veterinary Medical Association, in a news release. "In fact, veterinarians report that periodontal disease is the most commonly diagnosed problem in dogs and cats. This can lead to painful infections of the mouth, and in severe cases these infections can spread and become life-threatening conditions. During Pet Dental Health Month, the AVMA is encouraging all dog and cat owners to regularly brush their pet's teeth and regularly see their veterinarian for checkups."

If you've never brushed your pet's teeth before, visit the AMVA's Web site

Here are some more tips on attaining proper pet dental hygiene:

Take your pet to the veterinarian for a dental exam. Don't wait for his annual checkup if you suspect a problem.

Begin a dental care regimen at home. Your veterinarian can suggest steps that may include brushing your pet's teeth. One of the most convenient and effective ways to combat oral disease is feeding specially formulated foods proven effective in combating plaque and tartar buildup.

Schedule regular veterinary checkups. These are essential in helping your veterinarian monitor the progress of your pet's dental health routine. Your veterinary health care team can help you schedule visits.
