This webcast will discuss modern-day mouthguards and oral appliances, which were first reported in the treatment of bruxism and have since been used to protect against athletic injuries as well as for the treatment of TMJ, bruxism and sleep apnea. The American Dental Assoicatin and other organizations recommend the use of protective mouthguards during many sporting activities. Most recently, there has been a resurgence of interest in athletic performance mouthguards, which have been found in a number of studies to improve reaction time, muscle strength and sensory functions. These may also offer protection depending on the design.
The webcast will discuss the relevance of the different types of modern mouthguards and mouth pieces, the types of materials that can be used, and the results that have been observed with these.
