Dental Trade Alliance members attendmini-dental school
May was a busy education month for Dental Trade Alliance, as more than 35 DTA members attended the Mini-Dental School in Denver and the Mini-Dental Hygiene School in Washington, D.C.

The first program took place on May 5 and 6, when DTA members from around the country converged at the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine to get an overview of what it takes to be a dentist.

"The content of the Mini-Dental School offered an excellent overview of trends in the dental industry, as well as fundamental aspects of dental specialties, coupled with hands-on clinical experience,” said Scott Anderson of A-dec, Inc. “It was a thoughtful and applicable overview for anyone who would like a broader and deeper knowledge of the industry.”

Participants learned dental terminology, practiced root canal techniques, and spoke with graduating dental students about their plans after graduation and what considerations will influence the decisions they make on future equipment and supply purchases.

Based on the popularity and success of the DTA Mini-Dental School during the past 11 years, the DTA expanded its educational offering this year with the launch of a two-day Mini-Dental Hygiene School at the College of Dentistry at Howard University in Washington, D.C.

Participants attending the inaugural Mini-Dental Hygiene School gained insights into the key role of dental hygiene, as well as an understanding of the skills and training necessary to become a dental hygiene professional. Participants not only learned about dental anatomy and the factors that contribute to a healthy mouth and teeth, but experienced many of the same clinical exercises that dental hygiene students receive during their academic training. Attendees also met with Howard University Dental Hygiene School students, as well as graduates who are practicing in a variety of capacities, from private and group practices to community health services and research positions with the National Institute of Health (NIH).

Leading change at the Patterson Dental Leadership Summit
The 2014 Patterson Dental Leadership Summit officially kicked off June 5, with a welcome presentation by Patterson Companies Chairman and CEO Scott Anderson. Anderson addressed the crowd of Patterson business and manufacturer partners, highlighting key strategic partnerships and competitive advantages that include Patterson’s specialized sales force, a decentralized structure that enables decision-making close to the customer, full-service support led by the unparalleled Patterson Technology Center, and technology offerings led by the industry’s leading CAD/CAM digital impressioning solution: CEREC by Sirona Dental Systems.

Patterson Dental President Paul Guggenheim also expressed his appreciation to manufacturers for joining Patterson branch, region, and corporate management teams for this year’s Leadership Summit, themed “Leading Change.” Guggenheim ran through a list of customer-focused initiatives that have hit the ground running. More than half of all customers place their orders through the improved PattersonDental.com, and Patterson’s commitment to providing the best educational resources to dental staffs continues to be a top priority. Additionally, updates to the PattEdge web portal, which delivers real-time customer information to the sales team, continue quarterly. The infrastructure is in place for Patterson Dental’s new Special Markets Division, as well as its digital 3-D office design service, enabling clients to visually “walk through” the new or remodeled office.

On the technical service side, the rebrand to Tech Edge is taking root, which gives service vans a new look.

Leadership Summit events also included celebrating branches (by group) that led in sales of DentaCheques books, which financially support the delivery of care to thousands of vulnerable people through Dental Lifeline Network and its Donated Dental Services (DDS) program. The winning Patterson branches are Detroit, Louisville, Kansas City, Scranton, and Maine.

NYU College of Dentistry/Henry Schein Cares Global Student Outreach Program returns to Poughkeepsie
During the week of June 2, students from Poughkeepsie City School District schools received complete dental treatment, with no required out-of-pocket cost to families, thanks to the New York University College of Dentistry/Henry Schein Cares Global Student Outreach Program. As part of this program, NYUCD professors, dental students, dental residents, and dental hygienists participate in mission trips, providing free oral health care education, emergency dental services, screenings, prevention, sealant application, and restorative treatment to underserved communities throughout the United States, Latin America, Central America, India, South Asia, and Africa.

The Program is the result of a partnership between NYUCD, Henry Schein, Inc. and local partners in each targeted community. Henry Schein Cares, the company’s corporate social responsibility program, provides all of the dental supplies used by the missions for each of the programs that take place throughout the year. Henry Schein, Inc. throws first pitch at Major League Baseball game
Henry Schein, Inc. recently supported the John H. Smyth Scholarship program by selling tickets to the Philadelphia Phillies’ baseball game against the New York Mets on May 30. Proceeds from ticket sales went toward an annual $5,000 scholarship, which is awarded to a member of the Julia R. Masterman Laboratory and Demonstration School graduating class. Vickie Waitsman and John Smyth established the scholarship fun, in memory of their son John H. Smyth, who died suddenly in 2005 at age 16.

By selling the most tickets to the game, Henry Schein selected one of its Team Schein members to throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Eighty fellow Team Schein members cheered on Jules Paoletti, a Glen Mills, Penn. resident. Henry Schein was honored to participate in this event to support their long-time partner, Vickie Waitsman, vice president and general counsel, DentalEZ Group.
