hygiene politics survey

Kristine Hodsdon, the director of RDH eVillage wonders about the comments overheard from opponent to the dental hygiene profession.

The issues surrounding access to care has intrigued me. I think oral health and the delivery of care — given the financial crisis our nation is facing and related health-care questions — each decision is tied to another complex issue. Our worlds have never been more interconnected.

However, what has kept me the most interested is how the various sides to the issues respond publicly to their "perceived" opposition.

Recently in New Hampshire, opponents to legislation that would establish the independent regulation of dental hygienists and /or a dental hygienists' committee within the board of dental examiners, publicly commented:

• "What if they have a bad hair day?"

• "Hygienists are like the caddy to Tiger Woods"

• "Dental hygiene is so easy a monkey could do it."

Therefore, I ask RDH eVillage readers: What comments have you heard spoken or whispered by opponents of hygienists that make you say, "Give me a break!"
