As Good As New: A Consumer's Guide to Dental Implants by Dr. Charles A. Babbush was recently named a finalist by the Independent Publishers Book Awards for 2004. The "IPPY" awards, launched in 1996, recognize the deserving but often overlooked titles published by independent authors and publishers.

This year 2,068 titles were entered by 1,327 publishers representing all 50 states and the District of Columbia along with 12 foreign countries. The awards honor outstanding books in 55 categories. A winner and two finalists are chosen from each. Being chosen as a finalist for the Independent Publishers Book Award is a significant accomplishment, comparable to that of being named a finalist for the Pen/Faulkner or National Book awards.

"Just being selected as one of the top three books in the category is fantastic, given the number of books that were entered into the competition," commented Babbush.

One of the leading dental implant surgeons in the world, Babbush credits the success of this book to the fact that he was able to draw upon more than 35 years of experience in research, development, and practical application in the field of dental implants. "I wrote it because there was really nothing available for potential patients to learn everything they needed to know about dental implants so that they could make an informed decision about whether dental implants are right for them." Babbush explains that dental implants have advanced significantly over the past 10 to 20 years. What was once considered "experimental" is now a safe, viable, and predictable choice for restoring teeth to a condition "as good as new."

Babbush's distinguished career includes teaching positions at three premier universities across the globe and 28 societal and academic offices and appointments. He is currently Clinical Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery as well as Director of Dental Implant Research at Case School of Dental Medicine in Cleveland. He has received 20 honors and professional awards and has authored more than 50 publications and three academic textbooks. A highly sought-after speaker on many oral care topics, Babbush has lectured at more than 750 seminars, symposiums, and clinics around the globe. He is also the director of The Dental Implant Center in Lyndhurst, Ohio, where he maintains his dental implant practice.
