Infection control review course to start the year

Jan. 22, 2014
Review your office's procedures to start the new year

Infection control concerns were front page news last year, with the case in Tulsa, Okla., making headlines. While the media, the dental community and the public continue to focus on this issue, now is a great time to revisit the infection control policies and procedures in your dental office — and start 2014 off on the right foot.

The DALE Foundation, the official affiliate of the Dental Assisting National Board, Inc. (DANB), offers the DANB ICE Review, an interactive, online course that serves as a great review and refresher for new dental team members as well as seasoned professionals.

The course is worth 12 CE credits and covers everything from proper barrier techniques to preparing dental instruments for sterilization to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards. The DANB ICE Review allows you to tackle this extensive subject matter on your own schedule during the six-month access period.

“Dental assistants play a vital role in helping patients feel more secure in the dental chair,” notes Kathy Eklund, RDH, M.P.H., subject matter expert for the DALE Foundation’s DANB ICE Practice Test. “They should have the correct information and knowledge to apply infection control procedures in the right way.”

The DALE Foundation regularly updates its courses with the latest changes in the field. For example, OSHA is revising its Hazard Communication Standard — a change that is being phased in from December 2013 to June 2016. One of the major changes is requiring pictograms on labels to alert users of the chemical hazards to which they may be exposed.

DANB’s Infection Control (ICE) exam will be updated with these new OSHA changes, as will the DALE Foundation’s DANB ICE Review. The DALE Foundation’s DANB ICE Practice Test has already been updated.

As Eklund stresses, “The bottom line is that infection control must be a priority.”
