Munchausen syndrome (now referred to as “factitious disorder imposed on self") is a "self-inflicted" mental health condition in which patients intentionally fabricate or induce symptoms of in order to gain medical attention. Although it isn't common, there's always a nonzero chance you'll encounter a patient with Munchausen's in your practice. Therefore, it's best to be prepared.
