VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Canada--LED Dental has announced that the VELscope Vx oral health screening device has received CE Mark approval.
The VELscope Vx is the latest generation of an adjunctive screening device that is used in conjunction with the traditional head and neck exam to help locate and identify abnormal tissue that may not be visible to the naked eye, including oral cancer and premalignant dysplasia.
The accreditation certifies that the VELscope Vx has met the health and safety standards of the EU, opening the door to market the product to the European economic community, as well as to other countries that recognize the CE Mark.
The World Health Organization recognized the VELscope system as one of eight products that addresses global health concerns, and it won the prestigious “Best of Class” technology award from the Pride Institute and Dr. Lou Shuman. The VELscope Vx system was featured on the nationally syndicated “The Dr. Oz Show,” and has been highlighted by a number of local television news programs.

A recent study at the University of Washington, published by Edmond L. Truelove in the July/August 2011 edition of General Dentistry, showcased the importance of including a VELscope exam with the traditional head and neck exam.
Of the 620 low-risk patients that were screened, VELscope helped locate 28 lesions, including five cases of dysplasia, that were missed by the naked eye. In addition, a report published in Cancer Prevention Research in 2009 showed how the VELscope’s tissue fluorescence can not only assist the clinician in assessing lesion margins during excision but also help to reduce recurrence rates.
