NYU one-day course

NYU College of Dentistry course offers seven MCE lecture credits and is ADA CERP-approved.

The NYU College of Dentistry in partnership with the New York State Dental Foundation, will present a one-day continuing education course Sept. 16, 2011, called "Pediatric Dentistry for the General Practitioner."

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., with the course running from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The-one day course presents practical evidence-based information that will help make working with young children a satisfying and productive experience in a dental practice. A range of infant/toddler oral health issues will be explored, including care for the pregnant woman, prenatal oral health, tooth formation and eruption, infant oral medicine, nutritional guidance, initial oral evaluation, risk assessment, oral hygiene, prevention, therapeutic interventions, anticipatory guidance, and an understanding of the Head Start System and its dental requirements.

Course objectives
• Understand the dental caries process and the prevention of oral disease in young patients
• Identify oral lesions and pathologies in young children
• Learn behavior management techniques consistent with AAPD Guidelines and policies
• Examine young children using the knee-to-knee method
• Be able to provide fluoride varnish as needed
• Understand the role of diet and nutrition in early childhood caries
• Be better able to manage the oral health of infants, toddlers, pre-school children, including those in Early Head Start/Head Start
• Be affiliated with a mentor and have a referral network in place

Speakers
Amr Moursi, DDS, PhD, is associate professor and chairman of the NYU Department of Pediatric Dentistry and an attending dentist on the medical staff at Bellevue Hospital Center.

Neal Herman, DDS, FAAHD, is a clinical professor of pediatric dentistry at NYU College of Dentistry and an attending pediatric dentist at Bellevue Hospital.

Lisa Sasson, RDH, MPH, is the dietetic internship director and a clinical associate professor in the pediatric department at NYU.
