Biolux Research filing

Patent is for regulation of orthodontic tooth movement.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Canada--Biolux Research has announced the filing of a second patent application for a method and apparatus for accelerating and regulating orthodontic tooth movement with light treatment technology.

The company filed the application through the Patent Cooperation Treaty process, which will allow for expansion of patent protection to more than 200 countries, includes major markets of the world.

Orthodontic treatment timelines are typically 24 months due to the time required for the natural processes of bone resorption and bone regeneration as tooth roots move through the bone. During traditional orthodontic treatment with brackets and wires providing the mechanical forces to move the teeth, the average patient may experience discomfort and pain, as well as increased self-consciousness and change of diet.

Thus, there is strong interest from the patient and orthodontic community to decrease the overall treatment timeline for orthodontics, particularly in the adult orthodontics market. There are approximately 10,000 orthodontists in the U.S. and Canada with approximately 2.5 million patients who undergo orthodontic treatment annually.

Biolux technology accelerates the rate of tooth movement through bone by accelerating the biological processes of bone resorption and regeneration through the introduction of light energy directly into the tissue. The technology is noninvasive and is compatible with orthodontic tooth movement systems and mechanics.

“We are very pleased with our success in decreasing orthodontic treatment timelines, in expanding our intellectual property portfolio, and in increasing value for our shareholders,” stated Kevin Strange, president and CEO of Biolux. “Orthodontics is a very large and growing market in dentistry with a clear need and desire to reduce treatment timelines, and we believe we have the breakthrough innovation to revolutionize the market.”
