Utah dentist elected ADA second vice president

CHICAGO--A.J. Smith, DDS, who practices general dentistry in Salt Lake City, Utah, was as second vice president of the American Dental Association during a meeting of the 2009 ADA House of Delegates in Honolulu, Hawaii.

As second vice president, Dr. Smith will serve on the ADA Board of Trustees, which formulates and reviews policies and programs and makes recommendations to the members of the ADA's governing body, the House of Delegates.

In this capacity, he will play a major role in the ADA's overall objective of protecting and improving the public's oral health and promoting advances in dentistry. The ADA consists of more than 157,000 member dentists throughout the United States and its territories.

Upon completion of his term as second vice president, Dr. Smith will become first vice president in October 2010.

Dr. Smith's previous responsibilities with the ADA include serving as chair of the Council on Dental Practice and a delegate to the ADA House of Delegates. He is a past president of the Utah Dental Association.

He earned his dental degree from the University of the Pacific. Dr. Smith and his wife, Leah, have two daughters--Sasha and Sierra. They became first-time grandparents last year.
