BERKELEY, California--The Eco-Dentistry Association£, an international association of dental professionals who use eco-friendly methods, has coordinated a relief effort with Discus Dental, Preserve, and Pure Life Dental to get dental supplies to those in need in Haiti.
The pooled donations are being sent through Heart to Heart International, a humanitarian aid organization that has built a supply pipeline into Haiti. Heart to Heart volunteers will assemble many of the supplies into personal hygiene kits that will be provided to the people of Haiti. Federal Express has offered to donate its services to deliver the supplies.
"The devastation in Haiti is profound, and now is the time for all of us to help in some way to ease the suffering of the Haitian people," said Ina Pockrass, co-founder of the Eco-Dentistry Association.
"So we called upon leading suppliers in the industry and they stepped up immediately with generous donations. This effort represents the best of dentistry. We were able to coordinate the logistics quickly and get the needed supplies on their way."
Added Steve Semmelmayer, CEO of Discus Dental: "We were more than happy to donate our products to our friends at the Eco-Dentistry Association and Heart to Heart International and help provide some relief to the people of Haiti."
Among the donated supplies were more than 4,000 toothbrushes, 9,000 tubes of toothpaste, thousands of packages of dental floss and alcohol-free mouthwash, as well as 10 cases of latex gloves.
Volunteers will assemble the personal hygiene kits in individual plastic bags, along with soap, washcloths and other items. They will be distributed by Heart to Hear International's volunteers on the ground to people in Haiti.
