A friend of mine recently went on a women’s retreat. She shared how one evening, each attendee chose her favorite color of yarn. In turn, everyone intertwined her yarn into a loom creating a beautiful mosaic. The single patterns were random, but the overall effect was stunning.

This last year has seen some incredible events that touch humans beyond imagination. And with that said, Woman Dentist Journal is proud to showcase Dr. Usa Bunnag, who listened to her heart and went halfway around the world to help the tsunami victims. Read about how her mission started as a dream, but now will continue as reality. It was Usa herself who contacted me shortly after this catastrophic event to spread the word about getting others involved in her mission. Being so moved by her passion and commitment, I knew she would be an excellent cover dentist with a story that had to be told.

But we don’t stop with just one story about giving back. Learn about an African mission from Dr. Glenda Payas. Her pictures tell a thousand words! Be sure to read Dr. Anita Myers’ Give Back a Smile case, as well as the articles about Give Kids a Smile and the Children’s Dental Center. These are the common threads women dentists are weaving.

We round out our issue with an article on creative operatory monitor placement and showcase some great products in the “New Products” section.

With the year coming to a close, I want to remind everyone to take advantage of current tax laws. As a practitioner and savvy businesswoman, you and your practice can readily benefit from equipment purchases. Consult your accountant for the strategy that best fits your needs.

Finally, if you ever want to make a difference in this world, perhaps desire to help the needy or less fortunate, or improve the various access to care demands - these are stories for you! Looking back over this year, I am grateful to know Usa, Glenda, Anita, Debra, Fern, and the many others who gave and will continue to give so openly of themselves to make this a better world.

Here’s to making the world a better place in 2006!
