I can’t help it. I get sentimental this time of year. Part of it is the fact that I do love Christmas and the lights and the overall goodwill that seems to permeate humanity this time of year … but the other part is the thought of one year ending and another year beginning. In my mind, there’s something very definitive about the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve and knowing that the calendar has turned. It’s a time for new hope, new dreams, and a new start. It’s a time when the past can become the past and the future is open for the taking. What will 2013 hold? That’s the beauty of it … it’s up to each of us to write the future and determine what the New Year will bring.
But before we get too far ahead of ourselves and go head first into 2013, it’s great to take a moment and look back at 2012. As the ball drops on New Year’s Eve and the seconds tick toward 2013, where will you be? I’ll be ringing in the New Year in the Old World … standing in the middle of St. Mark’s Square in Venice with the love of my life. I can’t tell you how excited I am to be there with her, starting a new year together. (We’ll be toasting midnight in Venice when it’s 6 p.m. in New York’s Times Square … that will seem strange). I hope that you’ll be able to spend the last moments of 2012 and the first moments of 2013 with the people who matter in your life … be it friends, loved ones, or family.
We’ve all heard the song “Auld Lang Syne” played on New Year’s Eve, but have you ever really heard the lyrics that go with it? Below are the updated lyrics (not the original Scottish words), and I think there’s a great message in there for all of us in 2013.
