Tuesday Tip from Pride Institute: How to bypass the bad dental staff meeting and get real change

Nov. 26, 2013
Dental staff meetings do not need to be a waste of time

By Amy Morgan, CEO of Pride Institute

It never fails to amaze me — whenever I go onsite into a non-Pride office, I see mediocre (at best) staff meetings and morning huddles that are “full of sound and fury, signifying nothing” (aka – no change)! Everyone knows they should be having productive meetings, but the guilty secret is that just as many know it’s not happening in their practice. So the question is, what gets in the way?

Here’s my top five list of what gets in the way of productive meetings: 1) The team not knowing or feeling comfortable with their roles. Huddles and meetings are usually the playground of those who speak the loudest and longest, leaving the quiet and withdrawn or implicitly negative out in the dark. 2) The complete amnesia that kicks in when teams are analyzing what’s right, and the “OCD” detail that kicks in when they’re swimming in what’s wrong. I know we all tend to be naturally critical, but how about capturing the excellent process so you can focus on results.3) The propensity to demand THE solution without fully understanding the problem. At Pride Institute, we teach several techniques about analysis/brainstorming. We strive for all our offices to use the entire set of problem solving tools at each and every opportunity. 4) The much more productive “meeting after the meeting,” which is either in the parking lot or, even better, during happy hour. This forum is where the action truly takes place but it is never talked about in the office. 5) Finally, TIME. No time, compressed time, wrong time, or late time means there was no real value in the meeting in the first place. I’m laughing on the outside and crying on the inside because meetings can and should be productive and beneficial to all!
