Dr. Christensen acknowledges that there must be advantages to full zirconia crowns because the profession is seeing zirconia surpass even porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns in quantities done in laboratories.
What are the advantages of full zirconia crowns? Dr. Christensen says that for starters, prices are down about a third from what they were just a few years ago. Also, they’re very strong. From his experienced point of view, one of the main advantages is minimal tooth preparation.
It will take a few years before the profession realizes any disadvantages. At this time he says it’s in the evolutionary stage and it will take about five years before dentists really know what they’re doing with full zirconia. For now, Dr. Christensen finds them very promising.
