Welcome to DE's Breakthrough Clinical with Stacey Simmons, DDS!

Feb. 18, 2015
Editorial Director Stacey Simmons, DDS, introduces you to DE’s Breakthrough Clinical with Stacey Simmons, DDS, a newsletter designed to push away the boundaries of the clinical office and allow you to gain access to dental colleagues all over the world! Join us as we help you improve your clinical and practice skills in the areas of pediatric dentistry, endodontics, periodontics, orthodontics, pharmacology, TMJ, and implants … and even the growing and financial pains that accompany clinical achievement. This month, we will focus on behavior management considerations of the pediatric dentistry patient and give you advice to help you avoid the common pitfalls in endodontic diagnosis.

Will Rogers said, “Even if you are on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.” Isn’t that the truth! How many of you feel that you are on the right track in your practice but need to spice things up a bit? Variety is the spice of life, but given our busy schedules, it can be hard to do. I get it — 100%! I am a dentist, small business owner, mom (of three boys!), triathlete, author, teacher, etc. The responsibilities never end, and it is easy to feel overwhelmed because for some of us, just getting through the day is a feat in and of itself.

“DE’s Breakthrough Clinical with Stacey Simmons, DDS” wants to help you improve your clinical and practice skills through the eyes and experiences of your dental colleagues. Knowing that you are not alone in your practice endeavors, and that every single one of your general practice colleagues is, to some extent, going through similar successes and challenges in their own practices, should offer you encouragement and motivation to stop making your rut in the road a bit deeper and help you move beyond the walls of your practice!

Breakthrough will feature articles on virtually every topic in dentistry — pediatric dentistry, endodontics, periodontics, orthodontics, pharmacology, TMJ, and implants. We’ll also explore the growing and financial pains that accompany clinical achievement. What’s more, the content of this newsletter will be reader-driven. I will encourage your questions, suggestions, and welcome your difficult case reports so we may all learn from each other. You will also have the opportunity to gain friendships and start networking on Breakthrough’s Facebook and Twitter accounts. Do you see the possibilities? Look at it as a clinic without walls with classmates all over the country!

Do you have an interesting pathology case you would like to share with Breakthrough’s readers? If so, submit a clinical radiograph or high-resolution photograph, a patient history, diagnosis, and treatment rendered to: [email protected]. We will let you know if we select your case!

This month … Do you ever look at the schedule and see that 7-year-old Jane is coming in for some fillings and then tense up because you know treating her will be a challenge? I have, and it stresses me out! What about that tooth that your patient says is hurting but the diagnosis is so elusive that you just shake your head and tell the patient to go see an endodontist? Dr. Conway Jensen, a pediatric dentist in Washington and Dr. Mickey Zuroff, an endodontist in Michigan have written brilliant articles on how you can better understand the behavior of the pediatric patient and then fine-tune your diagnostic skills for the achy tooth. I encourage you to read their stories and go beyond your practice walls without ever leaving your chair. Enjoy!
