Dental study clubs need a makeover: Tell us about your successful clubs

Dental study clubs can be informative and inspiring. But the truth is that most of them fail in those areas. Do you have a success story you can share?

I’ve belonged to quite a few study clubs over the years. I even ran one after I first graduated from residency. And I’ve had the great pleasure of lecturing at study clubs around the country. So I can say with a good deal of experience that most study clubs are a bit stale.

Twenty or so general dentists with a sprinkling of specialists gather in a clustered restaurant. Exhausted after a long day in the office, they trade pleasantries with their colleagues, down a glass of wine, and dine on some sort of chicken dish. A lecturer shows before-and-after photos of cases, and reviews well-known standards. The attendees feel fortunate if they can walk away with one clinical or practice management pearl that they just might incorporate the next time they’re in the office. Sound familiar?

Look, I’m all for the camaraderie and the CE. Some lecturers are especially inspiring and informative. Some clubs really get along and have a great time. But many times the whole affair is just dull; a wasted opportunity.

I’d love to hear from you if you’ve found a study club that’s a breath of fresh air. Perhaps you have a structured case presentation process with a tight crew. Or maybe you’re able to pull in major speakers because of some connections. If you’re involved with a study club that bucks the boring trend, tell me about it at [email protected]. I’ll share some of your winning examples in the near future.

Cheers,

Chris
