New lower kVAR StacoVAR mini helps control power factor

May 9, 2013
Device used for varied medical and health-care environments.
DAYTON, Ohio--Staco Energy Products has introduced the new extended range StacoVAR mini.
The mini is a cost-effective, wall-mountable automatic power factor correction bank that is intended for many medical, dental, and health-care environments. The motors that these establishments rely on for their air conditioning/heating, and air movement (blowers), as well as pumps, procedural equipment and more are inherently inefficient. This results in a poor power factor. The new product line extension uses the same components as the existing StacoVAR mini to maintain the desired power factor level through a microprocessor based controller that adjusts to system load conditions. Facilities that are charged a penalty for poor power factor can benefit from more efficient use of supplied power and avoid penalties and surcharges. Models are available from 11.5 to 28 kvar at 208V, 15 to 37.5 kvar at 240V, and 28 to 75 kvar at 480V.

Rugged metalized poly-propylene dry type capacitors are efficiently placed in a small compact enclosure. Capacitor-rated contactors with damping resistors reduce back-to-back switching currents.

This compact design includes capacitors, reactors, contactors and fuses, and is UL Listed. Capacitors provide efficient power factor correction, low watt loss, long life, and reliable operation. The heavy-duty design includes environmentally friendly, self-healing metalized polypropylene film dry type capacitors.

Each UL recognized capacitor is contained in an aluminum cylindrical housing and incorporates an over-pressure device and discharge resistor safety system. Capacitors include a five-year warranty.

"If utility invoicing includes terms like 'KVA demand' or 'adjusted (or billed) kw demand' or 'reactive power'," said Rich Zuccaro, Staco Power Factor Program manager, "then they are likely paying a penalty or surcharge for poor power factor. If that is the case, then they can benefit from StacoVAR mini extended range kvar technology, which often achieves payback in two years or less. In addition to being cost-effective, this product is space-efficient, occupying a small footprint."
