Nationwide, in the U.S. and Canada, dental assistants recently celebrated their profession during Dental Assistants Recognition Week (DARW), held from March 4–10.
This year, the theme for DARW was “Advancing the profession through collaboration and leadership.” This 2018 theme acknowledged the growing importance of dentistry’s role in health care and the responsibilities of dental assistants, according to the American Dental Assistants Association (ADAA).
Kantres D., CDA, said she appreciates the recognition she receives during DARW. “To be recognized during DARW makes us feel like, yes, we are important! Yes, we are seen, and yes, we are needed! We can be proud of our roles and work with confidence knowing that someone appreciates us,” she said.
“It gives you a little extra boost of confidence to be recognized,” agreed Sheena R., CDA.
Tyler W., CDA, said that DARW makes him feel proud to be a dental assistant. “DARW is a week when we can celebrate the profession we love, give our coworkers an extra pat on the back for our great teamwork and, finally, take pride in ourselves as professional dental assistants and in our profession,” he said.
To help dental assistants celebrate DARW, the Dental Assisting National Board Inc. (DANB) offered a few special items:

• DARW-themed Facebook posts highlighting dental assistants’ important roles in the dental office and dental profession
• DARW-themed blog posts about what DARW means to dental assistants, and more
