Products for coping with pandemic-related challenges: Cosmecore

June 5, 2020
In this series, Dr. Howard Glazer looks at products that can help practices during these challenging times. Here he reviews Cosmecore from Cosmedent, a resin used to reinforce the core of endodontically treated teeth.

Endodontically treated teeth tend to become brittle, often requiring internal reinforcement of the core to prevent fracturing. Since the COVID-19 outbreak, some patients may have completed endodontic therapy but have not yet had a post and core crown procedure. In these and routing instances, I particularly like Cosmecore.

Developed by Dr. Bob Margeas and available from Cosmedent, this new dual-cure resin material has a 7 mm depth of cure and it sets quite hard, will not gouge, and feels like dentin when you prep the core. This material is ideal when restoring an endodontically treated tooth with a fiber post(s), as you can secure your post with it while simultaneously making the core.

Cosmecore is a radiopaque, automix material that handles nicely without slumping, has a 90-second working time (longer than most others), and is fully set in about five minutes. It is available in shade A2, blue, or white, in 50 gm 1:1 automix cartridges.

Overall, Cosmecore is a great product that allows for a both rapid, secure placement of fiber posts and a hard-core buildup of immediate tooth preparation.
